2024 set to be the biggest year for Christmas Originals, as commissioners shift focus to adults

Adults are in for a Christmas treat as the proportion of adult-oriented festive titles continues to grow.

Festive children’s content is hugely oversaturated. While Ampere does not track all Christmas content produced before 2020, there were at least 2,260 hours of festive children’s TV and Movies available to stream in October 2024 (Children & Family content containing the word ‘Christmas’ in the title) – more than enough to keep a child busy for the festive period. As a result, we’re seeing a shift away from Children’s commissions, in favour of festive titles aimed at adults.

Christmas content has also been somewhat immune to wider industry slowdown seen throughout 2024 - while there were fewer released Christmas titles by mid-December 2024 than the previous year, there were still 135 Christmas Originals still waiting to be released (most of which were announced in 2024). Data from previous years shows that most Christmas titles are announced in the same year they are released, suggesting that once these upcoming titles are released, 2024 will be the biggest year so far for festive Originals.

With commissioners moving away from Children & Family content, most festive titles announced in 2024 were Romance or Comedy. Feel-good, festive juggernaut Hallmark announced the highest volume of Hallmark Christmas specials ever, with 49 new titles available to view in 2024 as part of its Countdown to Christmas, and Miracles of Christmas series. Other commissioners are also doubling down on Romantic holiday titles, with Netflix committing to further expansion of the Netflix Christmas Universe (or NCU)Romance titles represented 56% of all Netflix festive Originals announced in 2024.
