The shrinking subscription VoD window: implications for licensing content
As the streaming TV market gets ever more crowded, the streaming content licensing window is shrinking. Content that would typically have been sold for an 18 month license period is increasingly remaining on-platform for just six months. Exclusivity still rules in the subscription window, but shorter licenses open up the opportunity for 'playing the field' and moving content between multiple platforms within the subscription window. Ad-supported streaming licensing is adding to the complexity, overlapping with the thematic linear channel market where content is cropping up on multiple free or hybrid (mixed pay/free) streaming platforms and on linear channels simultaneously. Movies, in particular, are moving to very short duration windows with the streaming space. This report examines the trend and looks at the difference between both movies and TV shows and between major studios and independents.
