Call of Duty players typically engage with 5+ games in a month
Players of the leading live service games are not entirely loyal to any one title. In fact, as Ampere's Games Analytics data indicates, most play across multiple games within a month. In August 2025, across PlayStation, Xbox and Steam, the average Call of Duty HQ (CoD) player engaged with 5.2 titles including CoD. On Xbox, where game consumption is typically highest, this average reached 6.3 titles. Although the competition between CoD and Battlefield has been greatly hyped in recent months, these data points prove that it is not a zero-sum game. CoD players already actively engage with multiple other titles; why would one of those not be Battlefield 6?
Sandbox fans play the most games; Sports fans play the fewest
Across the leading live service games, in terms of the average volume of titles played within a month, players of Minecraft and Roblox topped the ranking at 5.6 and 5.7 titles respectively – a nod to the flexibility and loosely-categorised nature of these platforms: They attract gamers from all walks of life. On the other hand, EA Sports FC players generally play the fewest other games, at 4.6 titles per month, which exposes the nature of Sports game fans as having more singular tastes. Whilst genres like Sandbox – with almost infinite freedoms – Shooters, Battle Royale, Action and Strategy games have many overlapping qualities and incorporate a wide variety of themes, Sports games are far more narrow in scope.
In this way, new market entrants who choose the Sports genre will technically face less competition from titles in other content categories. However, every sport is unique, and many fans are focused on one particular type, which means a new title will not be of immediate interest to all Sports-focused gamers: A player with a passion for basketball may have no interest in soccer. So, despite the reduced competition from adjacent genres, individual sports games themselves can be quite segregated, which often results in a single title or franchise dominating each sports vertical – for example, EA Sports FC in soccer, NBA 2K in basketball, and MLB The Show in baseball.
Are Sports gamers less likely to play other Sports games?
In August this year, just 5% of EA Sports FC 25 players also played NBA 2K25, but when it comes to Roblox, 7% of players also played Take-Two’s basketball sim. This difference of 2% is only marginal, but it underlines the more focused tastes of Sports gamers. This is also the case for Call of Duty HQ – where 8% of players also played NBA 2K25 – and Grand Theft Auto V – where the overlap was 6%. Ampere’s Games Consumer data shows that the demographics of EA Sports FC 24/25 players and NBA 2K24/25 players are very similar, which again points to their more narrow preferences – it is not a wholly different audience, in terms of age and gender.
However, this reduced interest among EA Sports FC users seems to be specific to NBA 2K: Overlap with other Sports titles is more significant. EA Sports FC 25 players are more likely to play EA Sports UFC 5 and eFootball – another soccer title – than players of the other top live service games. This suggests soccer fans are less likely to also be interested in basketball content versus mixed martial arts, or even other soccer games.
Typically, players of any game are most likely to also be playing one of the leading live service titles, regardless of genre: Almost a third of EA Sports FC 25 players also played Fortnite in August, and more than half of Roblox players did the same. Across PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam, any given Roblox player is more likely to also be playing Fortnite than not.
