ViX takes on global streamers for Spanish-speaking market
TelevisaUnivision’s new pan-American streaming service ViX has placed itself among the top subscription video-on-demand (SVoD) commissioners of Spanish-language content. Over the past two quarters ViX has commissioned 18 Spanish-language titles and were beaten only by the 19 commissions of Netflix and a further 19 by Disney’s streaming bundle of Disney+ and Star+. ViX is the result of the recent merger between Mexico’s Televisa and American Spanish-language group Univision, two of the biggest media companies across Latin America.
Almost 75% of ViX’s commissions are Scripted content, positioning the streamer to compete directly with the Original content strategy of its two largest rivals in the region. This is reflected in the broad genre split of the top three commissioners, with the largest differentiator being Disney’s three Children’s titles. All three top commissioners have focused on Documentary, Comedy and Drama content, with the three genres accounting for over 50% of commissions at each. ViX boasts an early slate of Drama, Romance and Crime & Thriller commissions, a reflection of both Televisa’ and Univision’s rich history of telenovelas. Moving this audience across to the streamer through original titles, like the remake of the classic 1950s series Senda Prohibida, will be key to the platform’s success, quickly establishing ViX’s position as a supplier of Scripted, distinctly Latin American Original productions.
ViX, maintaining the identity of parent company Televisa, is focused on Mexico, where it has made 80% of its commissions. Other major SVoD commissioners have more varied geographies of Spanish-language Originals, but still have strong biases towards certain production hubs. As ViX focuses in Mexico, Netflix relies on Spain and Disney on Argentina. TelevisaUnivision is looking to leverage its dominant position in the Mexican production market to accelerate the growth of its nascent streamer . The ultimate goal is to challenge the more established Spanish-language VoD players through Original production, using Mexican content’s popularity across Latin America and the USA as a path to international growth.
