Amazon commissioning overtakes Netflix for the first time
January 2020 saw Amazon Prime commission more new TV series than SVoD rival Netflix for the first time, as the latter stabilises production output. Ramping up its capacity for original series, Amazon also boasts a higher proportion of in-house productions, with 17% of all its upcoming series produced by Amazon Studios, compared with 12% of all upcoming Netflix series. Moreover, Amazon Originals focus on high-ended scripted fare, with more Crime & Thriller titles than any other genre – Netflix’s upcoming catalogue is dominated by, mostly lower cost, comedy content.
